Mushroom corals
Mushroom corals are a soft corals closely related to anemones, found throughout the tropical seas. They are ideal for beginners new to the hobby as easy to care for and come in a huge array of colours, from green, blue, orange and reds and all sorts of combinations.
The most common species are Discomosa, Rhodactis, Ricordea, and less common Amplexidiscus
Discomosa corals are generally smooth disc shaped corals with a few species having coloured pimples. The superman or Tonga red mushroom corals are some of the most sort after corals in this family.
Rhodactis corals have hairy or bumpy tentacles and can have a plain or bullseye colouration pattern. Bounce corals also fall into this family and it has remand a bit of a mystery as to what causes the bubbles.
Ricordea corals have a bubble appearance and are known for their vibrant colours. These include Yum and Bounce corals which can command a high price.
Amplexidiscus corals tend to be a lot large and can have the appearance of a Discomosa with multiple mouths or like the Amplexidiscus fenestrafer, commonly known as elephants ear, look like an over grown Rhodactis.
Most Mushroom corals prefer lower light levels in the blue spectrum and soft water flow. They prefer a higher nutrient aquarium in which they receive, along with the light, most of their energy requirements.
